Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thurday chaired a meeting on the cyclone-related situation in the country. He was briefed by top officials on the low-pressure system currently brewing over Bay of Bengal that could affect north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.
The low-pressure system is expected to intensify into cyclone - named Jawad - by Friday. The IMD has warned that it may cause heavy rainfall in coastal districts of Odisha, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
Cyclone Jawad is expected to reach Odisha coast on December 4.
The state government has asked collectors of 13 districts to prepare for evacuation of the people and chalked out a disaster management strategy. It involves deployment of NDRF, ODRAF and other disaster management teams.
After the Prime Minister's meeting NDRF chief Atul Karwal said that 33 more teams are being deployed at the required places to deal with the situation arising out of the impending cyclone.
"We are in constant contact with the state governments and assuring them of providing required NDRF teams," he told media persons.
On Wednesday, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba had chaired a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on cyclone-related issues.
