PM Modi cautions against selective interpretation of human rights issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned against the selective interpretation of human rights and its use to diminish the image of the country. He said of late, some people have started interpreting human rights from their own angle as per their selfish interests. Addressing the 28th National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Foundation Day programme in New Delhi on Tuesday, Modi said tendency to see infringement in one situation and not in a similar situation has damaged human rights a great deal. He also said that the biggest infringement of human rights takes place when they are seen from the prism of politics and political profit and loss. The Prime Minister said, this selective behaviour is equally damaging for democracy too. Modi said that India is committed to human rights ensuring that all welfare schemes reach the last person in the row. He called for cent per cent saturation of the basic facilities to the citizens which ensures the rights of the last person of the society.

Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Amit Shah said in the last seven years, about 60 crore poor people have been taken care of and ten crore women have been provided with toilets and about four crore houses have been provided access to electricity. Shah said in 28 years of its journey, NHRC has solved more than 20 lakh cases and has awarded more than 205 crore rupees compensation. He said, a new consciousness and awareness of human rights has been undertaken by the Commission. NHRC Chairperson Justice Retd. Arun Kumar Mishra called for a long term and effective plan for providing justice to the citizen. In his address, Mr Mishra said that instant justice is the fundamental right of the people but still it is just a dream. He said, the fact is that the cost of the litigations is beyond the rich.
