One person was killed and at least 16 others were injured after a speeding luxury car ploughed into roadside food stalls in a crowded area of Jaipur, police said on Saturday.The incident took place late Friday night near Kharbas Circle in the Patrakar Colony police station area. According to police, an Audi car, allegedly racing with another vehicle, lost control after hitting a road divider and rammed into a row of roadside food stalls.Station House Officer (SHO) Madan Kadwasra stated over 50 people were present at the spot when the car went out of control. “The car hit more than 10 stalls, ran over over 16 people and finally stopped after crashing into a tree about 100 metres away,” he said. Another car also overturned due to the impact.
The deceased was identified as Ramesh Bairwa, a resident of Bhilwara, who worked as a helper at one of the food stalls. Four of the injured were referred to SMS Hospital in critical condition, while others were admitted to Jaipuria Hospital. Three injured persons were discharged after receiving first aid, the SHO said.Police said the Audi driver was identified as Dinesh Rinwa, a businessman. He allegedly fled the scene along with two others, leaving the car behind. The vehicle was reportedly purchased around three months ago.
One of the occupants of the Audi was caught by local residents and handed over to the police. The accused were allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident. The car has been seized and mobile phones have been recovered from it, police added.Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed grief over the incident, calling it “extremely tragic and heart-wrenching.” He said instructions had been issued to ensure prompt and proper treatment of all the injured.Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, who visited the injured at Jaipuria Hospital and the SMS Trauma Centre, said doctors and medical staff had been directed to provide the best possible and timely medical care to all those injured.
