The Court has cancelled all outstanding non-bailable warrants against fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi's brother-in-law Maiank Mehta. A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court Judge VC Barde ordered that all outstanding non-bailable warrants against Mehta be cancelled on his appearance before the court on Tuesday. Mehta was ordered to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000. Judge Barde stated that if he has to leave the country, then he should take permission from the court. However, Mehta's lawyer objected saying that when summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Mehta will appear before them.
The lawyer also objected to the court’s condition that permission will be required for Mehta before leaving India. "We will intimate ED as well as the court. No permission should be required," said the lawyer. Mehta and his wife Purvi were accused in the PNB scam case and later turned approver. They moved a plea in the court stating that they wanted to turn approver, but in lieu of that, they wanted the warrants cancelled. The court had issued non-bailable warrants against the couple in 2018. A red corner notice was also issued against Purvi by Interpol. In February 2021, the Mehtas made separate pleas for the cancellation of the warrants. While the court did not cancel it, in April, it kept the non-bailable warrants in abeyance. They were allowed to be approvers only on the condition that they will make "full and true disclosure of the whole of the circumstances within (their) knowledge, relative to the offence and every other person concerned".
