For the first time the Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh hit out at agitating farmer unions and accused them of causing economic losses to the state. At a function in Mukhilana, in Hoshiarpur on Monday, Singh reminded the farmers, who have been protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws, that it is due to the Punjab government’s support that they are in Delhi. Instead of causing disruptions in the state, farmers should focus their energies on challenging the Union government, he asserted.Even today, farmers are protesting at 113 locations in the state and it is affecting our development," Singh said.
Capt Singh expressed serious concern over how it was adversely affecting Punjab's economy. Amarinder Singh’s remarks came as a surprise to many as he has supported the farmers’ cause since they began their stir last year. The Punjab CM’s U-turn on the farmers’ protests is significant ahead of the state assembly election next year. The farmers’ protest against the three contentious farm laws has completed ten months since they first arrived at Delhi borders. They have been demanding the repeal of the laws, which they are afraid will do away with the MSP system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations.
