In Maharashtra Civic polls, Mahayuti is getting strong voters support and the overall figures for 29 municipal corporations across the stare too tilt in the BJP's favour. The BJP-led alliance is headed to a massive victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections as the Thackerays lose grip on Mumbai's civic body after 25 years. Mumbai is set to get a BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) mayor after a long gap. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has emerged as the man of the moment. Under his leadership, the BJP has surpassed its previous high of 82 seats in 2017, winning or leading in 90 of the 227 wards in the BMC so far.
Counting of votes was held for 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including the prestigious Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of Mumbai, on Friday. The BJP-Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) was ahead in at least 1,635 of the over 2,800 wards across the corporations, restricting its rivals to around 190 leads.
Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday said the BJP was heading towards a majority in the Maharashtra civic polls and expressed confidence that the party-led Mahayuti coalition would secure a two-thirds mark. The people of Maharashtra have voted for development, he said.
The last BMC elections were held in 2017. Based on the schedule, the elections were set for 2022 but were delayed due to a series of factors. Among the key reasons for the delay in elections was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
