Iconic and versatile playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92, marking the end of an era in Indian music.Fondly known as Asha Tai, she recorded over 12,000 songs in more than 20 Indian and international languages, collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry. In 2011, she was recognised by Guinness World Records as the most recorded artist in music history.She is survived by her son Anand Bhosle and her grandchildren. Her elder son Hemant Bhosle passed away in 2015, while daughter Varsha died in 2012. She was admitted to hospital on Saturday evening following chest-related complications and a heart attack, and later succumbed to multi-organ failure.Her last rites will be held on Monday at Shivaji Park with full state honours by the Maharashtra government. Prior to that, her mortal remains will be kept at her residence in Lower Parel for the public to pay their respects.

Renowned for her wide vocal range and versatility, Asha Bhosle’s repertoire spanned film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, classical compositions, folk songs and even Rabindra Sangeet. Her distinctive voice and ability to adapt across genres made her one of the most celebrated singers in Indian music history.She was the recipient of several prestigious honours, including the Padma Vibhushan, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Maharashtra Bhushan Award. She also won the National Film Award twice for songs from films like Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat, along with multiple Filmfare Awards.
Born on September 8, 1933, in Sangli district of Maharashtra to Deenanath Mangeshkar, she rose from humble beginnings to become a towering figure in Indian music. She was part of the legendary Mangeshkar family, alongside her sister Lata Mangeshkar, and siblings Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Khadilkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.Her personal life saw early challenges, including her marriage to Ganpatrao Bhosle at 16, which ended in separation. She later married renowned music director Rahul Dev Burman, with whom she shared a celebrated musical partnership.Asha Bhosle’s legacy remains unmatched, with her voice continuing to resonate across generations, languages and musical traditions.
