Chaitra Shukla Purnima. On the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra, the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman—the devoted follower and servant of Lord Rama—is celebrated. On this auspicious day, one should worship Lord Hanuman with devotion. Those who observe a fast should maintain celibacy, sleep on the ground, and wake up early in the morning to remember Lord Rama, Mother Sita, and Lord Hanuman. Install an idol of Lord Hanuman and perform proper worship by chanting the mantra “Om Hanumate Namah.”
On this day, it is considered auspicious to recite the Sundarkand from the Valmiki Ramayana or the Ramcharitmanas composed by Goswami Tulsidas, or to organize the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa. Lord Hanuman’s idol should be adorned with sindoor (vermilion), a ritual known as Chola Chadhana. Offerings such as jaggery-soaked gram, roasted gram, or besan laddoos should be presented as Naivedya, followed by distribution of Prasad.
According to legend, Lord Hanuman—an incarnation of Rudra and an aspect of the wind god Vayu—was born with the purpose of serving Lord Rama and Mother Sita. His father was the Vanara king Kesari, and his mother was Anjana Devi.
At birth, Hanuman felt hungry. His mother went to the forest to bring fruits. Meanwhile, the young Hanuman saw the rising sun and mistook it for a red fruit. He leapt toward it with great speed. At the same time, Rahu was approaching to eclipse the sun. Hanuman struck Rahu, who then fled to Indra. Indra, thinking the cosmic order was being disturbed, struck Hanuman with his thunderbolt (Vajra), injuring his chin.
Angered by this, Vayu Dev stopped the flow of air, causing distress in the universe. Seeing this, Brahma and other gods came and revived Hanuman. All the gods then blessed him with divine powers and weapons. Brahma declared that Hanuman would grow into a mighty warrior, invincible in battle, and would play a crucial role in the war against Ravana, earning the grace of Lord Rama.
