The Centre has formed a 259-member committee headed by PM Narendra Modi to commemorate India’s 75th Independence Day. The members of the panel include former president Pratibha Patil, Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, NSA Ajit Doval, 28 CMs, Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, senior BJP leader LK Advani, Union ministers and several governors.The panel will also include former PM Manmohan Singh and HD Devegowda.
Opposition leaders like Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and former Uttar Pradesh chief ministers Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati are also part of the committee.The committee will provide policy direction and guidelines for the formulation of programmes for the commemoration of the 75th anniversary at the national and international levels.
The 75 years of India’s Independence falls on 15th August next year and celebrations are proposed to be launched 75 weeks prior to this date on 12th March this year. 12th March is the 91st anniversary of the historic Salt Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi. The Committee will hold its first meeting on Monday to discuss modalities relating to preparatory activities. The Government intends to commemorate 75 years of India’s Independence in a befitting manner at national and international level in the form of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
