The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has once again bagged the top position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, marking the seventh consecutive year of its dominance in the overall category. The Ministry of Education announced the 10th edition of the rankings on Thursday. IISc Bengaluru has been ranked as the best university, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education at second and third positions, respectively. Hindu College, Delhi retained its top rank in the colleges category, while Miranda House and Hansraj College secured the second and third spots.

Apart from the overall category, IIT Madras also topped the Engineering institutions category. Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, topped the Management institutions category. Further, AIIMS, Delhi, topped the Medical category while in the Law institutions category, the first rank was achieved by National Law School of India University, Bengaluru.
Speaking on the occasion, Pradhan said, in 2014-15, there were fewer than 3.5 crore students in the higher education sector, which has now increased to 4.5 crore, and the government aims to double this number by 2030. Mr Pradhan highlighted that in 2014, India had 11 institutions in the QS World University Rankings’ top 500 category, which has now risen to 54. The Minister also mentioned that India’s ranking in the Times Higher Education Rankings has improved from 49 in 2019 to 113 today. He also stated that six IIMs and two business schools from India are now among the top 100 in the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings
This year's rankings evaluated institutions under 17 categories -- including overall, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, open universities, skill universities, state public universities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Institutions are ranked on five key parameters: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
