Development, connectivity & growth of NE is a priority-PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the development of Assam is the priority of the Centre and the government is continuously working on it. He stressed that all should work together to make the North East a strong pillar of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He was speaking after launching the Mahabahu-Brahmaputra project in Assam on Thursday via video conferencing. Modi said that connectivity was a big challenge for the North East, but rapid progress has been made in this direction of late. Modi said that the long awaited demand is being fulfilled for the people of Majuli with the construction of the bridge.  He said that water ways would play an important role in connecting the North Eatern region with Southeast Asian countries. 

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that one lakh crore rupees project will be started in Assam in coming days. He said that due to the introduction of new technology projects the cost of the Jorhat- Majuli bridge could be reduced. Gadkari said that construction of Jorhat Majuli bridge and Dhubri - Phulbari bridge would give a major boost in the connectivity for Assam and Meghalaya.Gadkari laid the foundation stone for the bridge between Assam and Meghalaya and said there was a demand for the bridge for over 10 years and with the new bridge the over 200 km distance between the two states will be massively reduced.Gadkari said, “Assam and Meghalaya will have a direct connection with West Bengal through this bridge. The 55 km-long road construction from Serampore in West Bengal to Dhubri in Assam will begin this October. It will save the distance and time needed to travel to Bhutan, Bangladesh.”
