In Telangana, two-time Congress MLA from Vikarabad and former Minister, Gaddam Prasad Kumar has been elected unopposed as Speaker of the Assembly. All major parties supported his candidature. The Secretariat of the Assembly received only one nomination for the post on Wednesday. The opposition BRS also extended its support to the Congress candidate. The 59-year-old Prasad has been described by his party leaders as a soft-spoken and well-liked leader. Prasad contested for the first time for the Assembly on a Congress ticket in the 2009 elections and won comfortably. He was inducted into the Cabinet of N Kiran Kumar Reddy as Minister for Handlooms and Textiles. After separate Telangana state formation, Prasad lost two elections in 2014 as well as 2018.

In the recent election, he defeated the BRS’s candidate Anand by a margin of over 12 thousand votes. Pro-tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi will be announcing his unanimous election tomorrow on the floor of the house and handing over the responsibilities.
