India secures clean sweep in UN ECOSOC elections unopposed

India has secured a significant diplomatic win at the United Nations, sweeping all four elections to key bodies under the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) unopposed, reflecting broad global support for its candidature.In elections held on Wednesday, India was elected by acclamation—signifying unanimous approval—to the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations, and the Committee for Programme and Coordination.
Additionally, former senior diplomat Preeti Saran was re-elected in her personal capacity to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, where she had chaired the previous session.Saran, who served as Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, brings with her over three decades of diplomatic experience. During her 36-year tenure in the Indian Foreign Service, she has held key assignments as India’s envoy to Vietnam and in missions across Toronto, Geneva, Dhaka, Cairo, and Moscow.According to information,the CESCR comprises 18 independent experts tasked with monitoring the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The covenant guarantees fundamental rights including access to adequate food, housing, education, healthcare, social security, water and sanitation, and employment.
Meanwhile, the Committee on NGOs plays a crucial role in reviewing applications from civil society organisations seeking consultative status with the UN, ensuring their legitimacy and facilitating their participation in UN processes.The Commission on Science and Technology for Development focuses on key global issues in science and technology and their implications for sustainable development, while the Committee for Programme and Coordination supports ECOSOC by reviewing and aligning the work programmes of various UN agencies.ECOSOC remains central to the UN’s framework for advancing sustainable development across its economic, social, and environmental pillars.
