An earthquake measuring 6.0 in magnitude jolted Dhaka and several other parts of Bangladesh on Wednesday morning. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, earthquake located in Dhekiajuli in Assam was recorded at 8.21 a.m.The epicentre of the earthquake was 397 km North- North East of Dhaka. The earthquake was categorised as Strong by the Met Department. The earthquake was felt at several places like Sylhet, Mymensingh, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari close to the epicentre. However, no report of damage to property or damage to life has been reported as yet from Bangladesh.
According the US Geological Survey, the earthquake took place at 8:21am at a depth of 34km and the epicentre was near Dhekiajuli town, 140km north of Assam's main city, Guwahati, in India. Countries affected by the quake include parts of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Bhutan, and China. Meanwhile, Indian media quoted the country’s National Centre of Seismology in saying that the earthquake measured 6.4 on the Richter Scale and originated in Tezpur of Assam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Sonowal and took stock of the damage and has promised all possible assistance.Union home minister Amit Shah also enquired about the situation and wished for the well-being of the people in the area. The central government stands firmly with our sisters and brothers of Assam. Praying for everyone’s safety and well-being,” he tweeted.
