Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the Digital India initiative has transformed the way citizens access services, strengthened governance and accelerated India’s journey towards a technology-driven economy over the past 11 years.Marking the anniversary of the flagship programme, Modi said Digital India has become a symbol of India’s innovation, digital capabilities and inclusive development, giving the country a distinct identity on the global stage.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister highlighted the widespread adoption of technology across sectors, saying that when more than a billion people embrace digital solutions, the impact becomes transformative.PM said the initiative has touched various aspects of everyday life, from digital payments and online public services to technology-enabled governance, making services more accessible and efficient for citizens.“Digital India’s 11-year journey has provided India with a new identity globally,” Modi said, adding that the programme reflects the determination of citizens to use innovation and technology to take the country towards new heights.

The Prime Minister also underlined that the digital economy has emerged as an important pillar of India’s development strategy, supporting the vision of a self-reliant and developed nation.He pointed to the expansion of digital infrastructure, including optical fibre connectivity and digital transactions, as key factors behind India’s rapid transformation and growing global recognition in the technology space.
Launched in 2015, the Digital India programme was designed around nine key pillars, including broadband connectivity, mobile access, e-governance, digital delivery of services, electronics manufacturing, IT-enabled employment and technology-driven citizen services.Over the years, the initiative has evolved into one of the world’s largest digital public infrastructure ecosystems, supported by platforms for digital identity, payments and online services.India’s digital payments ecosystem has emerged as a global benchmark, with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) becoming one of the world’s largest real-time payment platforms. The rapid expansion of digital transactions has strengthened financial inclusion and enabled millions of people to participate in the formal economy.The growth of the digital ecosystem has also supported the expansion of startups, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and cybersecurity sectors, creating new opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.
