The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has gone live in Greece, marking another step in India’s efforts to expand its digital payment ecosystem globally, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday.Goyal said the integration will allow eligible customers in Greece to make instant, secure and seamless money transfers at significantly lower transaction costs compared with traditional payment methods.The minister highlighted that the global adoption of UPI reflects growing international confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing technology-led solutions that extend beyond national boundaries and strengthen economic partnerships.

According to agency reports,during his visit to Greece, Goyal met Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias to discuss ways to further deepen economic cooperation between India and Greece. He also encouraged Greek businesses to explore investment opportunities in India and discussed potential collaboration in manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.Goyal attended a live demonstration of the Eurobank-NIPL partnership at Eurobank’s headquarters in Athens. The initiative enables UPI services through Eurobank and represents a major milestone in the international expansion of India’s digital payments platform.The demonstration was attended by Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait.
Earlier, Goyal addressed the India-Greece Business Forum along with Greece’s Deputy Foreign Minister Harry Theoharis and interacted with members of the Indian diaspora.Emphasising India’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals and sustained economic growth, Goyal said the country presents significant opportunities for Greek businesses and investors.He also underlined the potential of the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in creating new avenues for trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two regions.Goyal said discussions focused on expanding cooperation across key sectors, encouraging businesses to co-create, co-invest and co-manufacture with India to strengthen bilateral ties and support shared economic growth.
