Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked on Wednesday during her weekly public grievance hearing, Jan Sunwai, at her Civil Lines residence, according to information shared by officials.
A man, believed to be around 35 years of age, first handed over some papers to the chief minister before allegedly attempting to assault her. He was immediately overpowered by security personnel and taken into custody. Police confirmed that the accused has been detained and is currently being questioned.The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated that the incident occurred while Gupta was interacting with citizens during the grievance redressal session. “The accused has been nabbed by Delhi Police and is being questioned,” the CMO said in a statement.Eyewitnesses described the atmosphere as chaotic. One attendee recounted that the chief minister appeared “completely in shock” following the incident. Another visitor, Shailendra Kumar, who had come from Uttam Nagar with a complaint regarding sewer issues, said, “When I reached the gates, chaos broke out because the CM was slapped. This is wrong…”
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “serious breach of security” and demanding accountability. He said the assault on the chief minister during the public grievance hearing was unacceptable and required an immediate review of security arrangements.Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav also criticized the attack, terming it “very unfortunate.” He added, “If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe?”The Civil Lines residence of the chief minister is a designated weekly venue where citizens come forward with their grievances. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and said more details will be provided after further inquiry.
