India has emerged as the world’s largest rice producer, overtaking China and underscoring the strength and diversity of its agrarian economy. With total rice output estimated at 1,245.04 lakh tonnes, the country’s production is anchored by a group of high-performing states that benefit from favourable agro-climatic conditions, expanding irrigation networks and robust procurement systems.Paddy cultivation in India is largely concentrated in regions with abundant rainfall, extensive river systems and well-developed canal networks, enabling multiple cropping cycles and stable yields.
According to information, Uttar Pradesh leads the country in rice production, contributing 194.1 lakh tonnes. Punjab ranks second with an output of 136.67 lakh tonnes, supported by intensive farming practices and assured government procurement. West Bengal follows closely, producing 118.54 lakh tonnes, aided by its multiple rice-growing seasons.Central and southern states have also emerged as major contributors in recent years. Madhya Pradesh produced 97.11 lakh tonnes of rice, while Telangana recorded an output of 96.35 lakh tonnes, reflecting rapid expansion in cultivated area and productivity.
Rice continues to play a crucial role in eastern and central India as well. Chhattisgarh produced 89.17 lakh tonnes, Odisha 84.54 lakh tonnes, Bihar 82.49 lakh tonnes and Haryana 63.71 lakh tonnes, rounding off the list of leading rice-producing states.The strong performance across diverse regions highlights India’s agricultural resilience and its ability to leverage natural resources, infrastructure and policy support to strengthen food security and maintain its position as a key player in global rice production.
