Five states -- Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh -- are experiencing an upsurge in daily cases of Coronavirus. According to a statement issued by the Union Health Ministry similar to Maharashtra, Punjab has also shown a sudden spike in the number of daily new cases reported in last 7 days with 383 daily new cases in last 24 hours. The health ministry has further stressed on the importance of adhering to the Covid protocols and appropriate behaviour for breaking the chain of transmission and containment of the spread of Covid. Only two states, Maharashtra and Kerala, account for 75.87% of total number of active Covid-19 cases, the ministry added.
The ministry said 18 states/UTs have not reported any Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. These are Telangana, Haryana, J&K (UT), Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Chandigarh, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Meghalaya, Ladakh (UT), Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Meanwhile, India reported13,993 new cases of the coronavirus disease and 101 related deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union ministry of health and family welfare data showed on Saturday morning. The country’s active caseload rose once again for the second day in a row and now stands at 143,127, up from Friday’s 139,542. India, which is the second worst-hit country in the world, now has 10,977,387 infections and 156,212 people have succumbed to the coronavirus disease so far, the health ministry’s dashboard showed at 8am. With 10,307 discharges between Friday and Saturday morning, 10,678,048 patients have recovered and it has pushed the national recovery rate to 97.27%.
The COVID-19 active caseload remained below 1.5 lakh.. 10,715,204 people have also been vaccinated against Covid-19 since January 16, when the government launched its mammoth inoculation drive. According to the ICMR, 21,02,61,480 samples have been tested up to February 19, with 7,86,618 samples being tested on Friday.
