Congress MLA Charanjit Singh Channi took oath as Punjab chief minister on Monday. He has replaced Captain Amarinder Singh, who submitted his resignation to Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday. Channi took oath in Punjabi.
Channi was chosen as the Congress' legislature party meeting which took place after Singh's resignation. He is the first Dalit chief minister of Punjab.
He will be assisted by two deputy chief ministers - Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, a Jat Sikh and OP Soni, a Hindu leader. Both of them were administered oath by the governor.
He has served as Technical Education Minister in the Amarinder Singh government. Channi is a three-time MLA from Rupnagar's Chamkaur Sahib.
Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat, the party's Punjab affairs in-charge and newly-appointed president of the party's state unit Navjot Singh Sidhu were present at the ceremony.
Amarinder Singh resigned due to a tussle with Sidhu, which began in 2019 but became ugly in the past few months. While Rahul Gandhi reached just in time for the ceremony, Amarinder Singh skipped it.
