The Central government signed a tripartite Karbi Peace Accord on Saturday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and the representatives of Karbi outfits in Delhi. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the signing of the Karbi Anglong Agreement marked an historic day for Assam. Under the new pact, the people belonging to the hill tribe are entitled to reservation under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Hailing the signing of the historic Karbi Anglong Agreement, Union minister and former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “I want to thank Modi government in centre which is committed to resolving the decades-old crisis, ensuring the territorial integrity of Assam. In February this year, 1,040 Karbi militants belonging to five outfits laid down arms before then Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal to return to the mainstream.These outfits originated from the core demand of forming a separate state. The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is an autonomous district council, protected under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
