Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Priyanka Tibrewal on Tuesday filed an objection against Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nomination for the seat. The party candidate has alleged that Banerjee did not reveal the pending criminal cases against her. A letter written by Tibrewal's election agent Sajal Ghosh to the returning officer of the Bhabanipur assembly constituency also mentioned several news reports carrying information pertaining to the pending criminal cases against Banerjee.
After filing her nomination on Monday, Tibrewal said that her battle for the Bhabanipur seat will be a fight against injustice, and also a fight for justice, for the people of West Bengal. The Bhabanipur bypolls will be held on September 30, and the counting of votes will take place on October 3 – a week before Durga Puja celebrations.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has nominated former Congress leader Sushmita Dev to the Rajya Sabha, saying it was West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's vision to "empower women". She joined Trinamool only last month. The DMK, on the other hand, named two of its own members to contest the October 4 bypolls, leaving no seats for the Congress party this time.
