Registered Post services have been unavailable at post offices across Bengaluru since Monday, August 4, due to a technical outage, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The disruption, caused by a “pan-India server issue”, has forced staff to turn away customers seeking to send secure registered mail.
A senior official at the Bengaluru General Post Office (GPO) said there was no clarity on when services would resume. “Unfortunately, we’ve been turning away customers walking in for the service. We haven’t received any intimation about when the service will be back. But we’re hoping it should be back soon,” the official said.
Registered post is a secure form of mail service where delivery is made only to the designated recipient, making it a preferred option for sending important documents such as legal notices, confidential correspondence, and official government papers. Although the popularity of the service has declined in recent years due to digital communication and faster alternatives, it continues to be widely used for formal and legal communication.
Adding to uncertainty among users, an internal India Post circular has indicated that from September 1, Registered Post services will be formally merged with Speed Post, effectively retiring one of the oldest offerings of India Post. With no official timeline yet for restoring the service, customers who rely on registered post face delays in sending time-sensitive documents, even as post offices await further instructions from national headquarters.
