The initial probe into the “murder” of Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar revealed that one of his friends had paid around Rs 5 crore to kill the neighbouring country’s parliamentarian, a senior police officer said in Kolkata on Thursday. “It was a well-planned murder. A huge amount of money, around Rs 5 crore was paid by an old friend of the MP to kill him,” the officer said. The Awami League MP’s friend is a US national and owns a flat in Kolkata, he said.Akhilesh Chaturvedi, IG, CID, had Wednesday said police had “reliable inputs” that Anar “may have been murdered”, but his body was yet to be recovered.
Earlier, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said on Wednesday that some Bangladeshis killed ruling Awami League(AL) member of Parliament Anwarul Azim Anar at a flat in New Town, near Kolkata.“The information we have so far is that the people of our country are involved in the killing,” the Home Minister said while speaking at a press briefing in Dhaka on Wednesday.Based on information from Indian police, Bangladesh police arrested three people in connection with the murder of Anwarul Azim, he said.
The home minister said, “We have been working to arrest a few more people. This is a murder…. Nothing happened here that would lead to deterioration in relations with India since no Indian is involved with the incident. According to the information we have received so far, some people from our country are involved in this murder.” “Jhenaidah is a bordering area known for its high crime rate. Azim was the local lawmaker there. The incident took place after he went to India for treatment. “MP Anwarul Azim was killed in a planned manner at a house in Kolkata. The Indian police are working to find out the motive of the murder, who committed the murder.” Asked about the whereabouts of the body, he said it could not be located yet.
Asaduzzaman Khan said “Our police are investigating the matter. We will be able to unearth the motive of the murder soon. Indian police are also working to find out who is involved in the murder. We are taking measures that need to be adopted internationally.”
Anwarul Azim Anar went to India for medical treatment on May 11. He maintained contact with his family members till May 14. Since then his phone remained switched off.MP Anar’s wife and daughters went to the Detective Branch office in Dhaka on Sunday. Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud said Kolkata police entered the flat where the MP was reportedly murdered but did not find the body.
As per information, MP Anar went to India for medical treatment on May 12, and was staying with a family friend named Gopal Biswas. He left Biswas's home, apparently to visit a doctor, saying he would return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message was sent from his phone later that evening saying that he was going to Delhi and that there was no need to call him. Another message was sent on May 15 to Biswas reiterating that he was in Delhi with "VIPs," urging not to call him. Since then, neither Biswas nor Anar's family heard from him.Meanwhile, Forensic team on Thursdaycollected samples from a car seized from the spot in Kolkata where Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar was found murdered.
