BJP leader Samrat Choudhary to be Bihar Chief Minister as Nitish Kumar resigns after 20 years. Choudhary will take over the reins of Bihar from Nitish Kumar, the BJP announced on Tuesday. A senior leader of the party and currently the deputy chief minister, he is expected to take oath on April 15 as CM. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary was elected the BJP legislature party leader on Tuesday, Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. Chouhan, whom the BJP parliamentary board named central observer for the legislature party leader's election, told reporters, “Samrat Chaudhary was unanimously elected as the BJP’s legislature party leader.”

The BJP, the single largest party in the 243-strong assembly with 89 MLAs, elected Choudhary as its legislature party leader soon after Nitish Kumar, who heads the JD(U) and became a Rajya Sabha MP last week, submitted his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain as the chief minister. Choudhary, BJP MLA from Tarapur, will be the next CM of Bihar after his election as the NDA legislature party. Choudhary expressed his gratitude to the BJP for bestowing him the opportunity to serve the people of Bihar. Taking to X, the BJP leader wrote, "This is not merely a position for me, but a sacred opportunity to serve the people of Bihar, to fulfil their trust and dreams. I pledge to live up to the expectations of one and all with complete dedication, commitment, and integrity."

Samrat Choudhary comes from a strong political family in Bihar. His father, Shakuni Chaudhary, was a six-time MLA from Tarapur, while his mother Parvati Devi also served as a legislator. This legacy gave him an early entry into politics. He began his career in 1999.In 2017, he moved to the BJP, where his rise was rapid. He held organisational roles such as state vice-president and later became the party’s Bihar unit president in 2023. In January 2024, he was appointed deputy chief minister in the NDA government led by Nitish Kumar.
