Bone-chilling temperatures gripped the national capital on Thursday as Delhi recorded its coldest morning of the season, with the minimum temperature plunging well below normal across the city.Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, registered a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest January minimum since 2023. The city had last witnessed a lower minimum on January 16, 2023, when the mercury had dropped to 1.4 degrees Celsius.
Other parts of the capital also reported sharp dips in temperatures. Palam recorded a minimum of 2.3 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road saw the mercury settle at 3.4 degrees Celsius. The Ridge station reported a low of 4.5 degrees Celsius, and Ayanagar logged a minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius.The minimum temperature at Palam was the lowest recorded there since 2010. The second-lowest minimum at the station was observed on January 7, 2013, when temperatures had fallen to 2.6 degrees Celsius.
All weather stations in Delhi reported minimum temperatures significantly below normal, indicating the persistence of cold wave conditions across the city. Delhi has been reeling under a cold wave for the past four days, and the conditions are expected to continue on Friday as well.Despite the frigid morning, the maximum temperature on Thursday is likely to hover around 21 degrees Celsius.Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘very poor’ category. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 349, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). An AQI between 301 and 400 is classified as ‘very poor’, indicating a high health risk, especially for sensitive groups.
