South African police are investigating the deaths of at least 22 people at a nightclub in the coastal town of East London Sunday early morning. It is unclear what led to the deaths of the young people, who were reportedly attending a party to celebrate the end of winter school exams. Health Department spokesperson Siyanda Manana said that at this point they cannot confirm the cause of death. Manana added that they are going to conduct autopsies as soon as possible to establish the probable cause of death. The deceased have been taken to state mortuaries. Another five people have been taken to hospital, according to local broadcaster eNCA. South African president Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences to the families affected. He said in a statement he was worried about the circumstances under which young people, potentially under the age of 18 years, were allowed to gather at the tavern but said the law must take its course once investigations conclude. East London mayor, Xola Pakati said in a statement: "What has happened can be equated to a massacre."
