Storm Claudia has wreaked havoc across Europe. in Portugal, three people have died including an elderly couple in a flooded home and a British woman killed by a tornado in Albufeira. More than 20 were injured. Roughly 2,434 incidents, mainly related to flooding, were reported between Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning, according to Portugal's National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection. The district of Faro in southern Portugal was particularly affected on Friday, with heavy rain and strong winds causing flooding and trees to fall, EuroNews reported.
Storm Claudia is bringing heavy and persistent rain to England and Wales, with 81.8mm already recorded between Thursday and Friday at a Natural Resources Wales rain gauge at Tafalog in Gwent, UK Met Office reported. Meanwhile, in the UK, Southeastern Wales and parts of England are grappling with severe flooding, with hundreds of flood warnings in place and dozens of active rescue operations underway.
Nearly 12 centimetres of rain fell in south-east Wales overnight, causing the River Monnow to rise to a record level and spill over its banks.Dozens of people were rescued or evacuated from their homes in the town of Monmouth, which is just upstream of where the River Monnow joins the River Wye. Several rail lines were disrupted by the high water and trees that were toppled by strong winds. The high winds also knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses, while trees blocked roads. Flooding was also reported in Portarlington, Ireland, and further damage was possible with some rivers not yet reaching their peaks.
