Uttarakhand: cloudburst hits Tharali tehsil of Chamoli district

In Uttarakhand , one more incident of cloud burst have occurred. This time in the Tharali market area and nearby village of Chamoli district. As per information, a person is missing in Chepdo village, while a girl was buried after debris fell on a house in Sagwara village. In Tharali, debris has entered 30–40 houses, and a similar number in Chepdo, said Chamoli District Magistrate (DM) Sandeep Tiwari. Roads to Tharali, where the cloudburst struck, are blocked at several points due to landslides, hampering movement. “The local administration has begun rescue and relief work. Labourers and JCBs have been deployed, and we have requested a helicopter from the state government to mobilise SDRF teams from Gauchar,” he said.

Several vehicles parked at the tehsil complex were buried under the debris. The heavy flow of water and debris turned the town’s streets into temporary ponds.Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with officials overseeing the rescue efforts. In a post on X, he wrote: “Late last night, a tragic report of a cloudburst was received in the Tharali area of Chamoli district. The district administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. In this regard, I am in constant contact with the local administration and am personally closely monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone's safety.”

Uttarakhand has been witnessing heavy, continuous rain with cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides this season. Earlier this month, a cloudburst led to flash floods in Uttarakhand's Harsil and Dharali, leaving many missing and significant infrastructure damaged.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an 'orange' alert for very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand till August 25. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Nainital, Dehradun on August 23, in Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh on August 24, and in Garhwal Hills and Nainital, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh on August 25," the weather department said.
