Rahul Gandhi trying to sow 'anarchy, chaos' by targeting EC: Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday dismissed the Opposition's allegation of vote theft as baseless and accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of attempting to weaken public trust in constitutional bodies like the Election Commission to sow seeds of "anarchy and chaos". Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Fadnavis rubbished media reports alleging rifts within the poll panel and asserted that all three election commissioners had clarified in a joint press statement on Saturday that decisions regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) were taken unanimously. The Congress and several other parties and organisations have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after a recent investigation by The Indian Express claimed that two election commissioners formally objected at least 14 times over 10 months to the poll panel's handling of the SIR process.

In Kolkata,West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday mounted a strong defence of the Election Commission amid the escalating political row over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, blaming former CM Mamata Banerjee for the deletion of 27 lakh names and asserting that neither the BJP nor the poll panel could be held responsible for the exclusions. Adhikari also cited Saturday's meeting of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, as well as the poll panel's subsequent press statement, to reject allegations that decisions relating to the Bengal SIR were taken unilaterally by the CEC. He said the meeting of the three commissioners showed that the decisions were taken collectively.
