On the birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday hailed the Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder’s legacy, saying his supreme sacrifice laid the foundation for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.Addressing a gathering in Gujarat’s Anand, Shah said, “Today is a very important day. On this day in 1901, Syama Prasad Mookerjee was born. Born in the land of West Bengal, he was a nationalist leader.The people of the nation are associating him with Jammu and Kashmir. That is correct because Kashmir would never have become an integral part of India without Syama Prasad.”
The Home Minister recalled Mookerjee’s unwavering opposition to Article 370, which granted special status and autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that Mookerjee had campaigned for “one nation, one Constitution” and rejected the idea of dual laws, dual symbols, and dual leadership within India.“He sacrificed himself for Kashmir, raising the slogan ‘Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Pradhan aur do Nishan nahi chalenge’ (There cannot be two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two flags in one nation),” Shah said, underlining the significance of Mookerjee’s movement for national unity.

Referring to Mookerjee’s contributions beyond Kashmir, Shah added that the credit for the integration of West Bengal also goes to him, alongside Swami Pranavananda. “The entire credit for West Bengal being a part of our nation today goes to Syama Prasad and Swami Pranavananda,” he remarked.Syama Prasad Mookerjee had died under mysterious circumstances in 1953 after being arrested in Jammu and Kashmir for entering the region without a permit, defying the then-prevailing rules under Article 370. His legacy continues to be upheld by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ideological affiliates, who credit him with laying the ideological groundwork for the eventual abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
