The Indian Navy congratulated Ms Kaamya Karthikeyan, an 18-year-old mountaineer and daughter of a naval officer, for scripting history by becoming the youngest Indian and the second-youngest female in the world to ski to the South Pole. A Mumbai-based mountaineering prodigy, Kaamya is the daughter of Indian Navy officer Commander S Karthikeyan and Lavanya Karthikeyan.An alumna of the Navy Children School, Kaamya achieved the feat after braving extreme Antarctic conditions, including temperatures plunging to minus 30 degrees Celsius and gale-force winds. She covered nearly 60 nautical miles (around 115 kilometres) on foot from 89 degrees South, pulling a sled carrying her full expedition load, to reach the South Pole on December 27, 2025.
The Indian Navy lauded her grit, determination and resilience, describing the achievement as a moment of immense pride for the service and the nation. Officials said her journey through one of the harshest environments on Earth stands as a testament to her physical endurance and mental strength.Kaamya is now on a quest to become the youngest person ever to complete the prestigious Explorers Grand Slam, an elite adventure challenge that involves skiing to both the North and South Poles and climbing the highest peaks on all seven continents — Mount Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson and Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid)/Mount Kosciuszko.

She has already completed the Seven Summits Challenge and previously made headlines as the youngest Indian and the second-youngest female in the world to scale Mount Everest from the Nepal side.In the last week of November, Kaamya’s South Pole expedition was flagged off from the iconic Penguin Enclosure at the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Garden and Zoo in Byculla, Mumbai, by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani.Congratulating her on the latest milestone, the Indian Navy said Kaamya’s extraordinary accomplishments are sure to inspire young people across the country to push beyond their limits and pursue excellence in every field.Wishing her success in her next endeavour, the Navy extended its best wishes for “fair winds and clear skies” as she prepares to take on the final milestone of conquering the North Pole.
