In a landmark decision, Suvendu Adhikari-led BJP government in West Bengal has raised the upper age limit for entry into state government jobs. The upper age limit for recruitment to Group A posts has now been set at 41 years. For Group B posts, the limit has been raised to 44 years. And for Group C and Group D posts, the maximum age is now 45 years.
The government clarified that where higher age limits are already in place, the existing rules will continue. Importantly, for recruitments outside the Public Service Commission – including state undertakings, government companies, and local self-governing bodies – the maximum age limit will also be 45 years. This decision will officially take effect from May 11, 2026.
Officials say the move is aimed at giving lakhs of job seekers a fresh chance, especially those who lost eligibility during years of stalled recruitment. The government has emphasized transparency in hiring and promised closer alignment with central schemes. For many educated youth in the state, this decision is being seen as a lifeline, reopening doors to long-awaited opportunities.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said Bengali culture would once again be at the forefront globally, asserting that the people of the state had "unshackled" West Bengal from a regime that had allegedly suppressed its cultural identity. In a post on social media platform X, Adhikari wrote, "The Glorious Bengali Culture admired Worldwide, thanks to the contributions of Revered personalities like Vishwa Kabi Rabindranath Tagore and other Great Sons of the Soil during the Bengal Renaissance, would again be at the forefront, because the People of West Bengal have unshackled the State from the Regime that had consciously suffocated the Bengali Culture and tried to forcefully impose foreign & regressive culture and tradition."
