Cyberattack hits 10 Uttarakhand Govt websites, services restored

A malware attack targeted the websites of 10 Uttarakhand government departments, including the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, temporarily disrupting online services before authorities restored the affected portals using secure backup data.
According to the agency reports,the cyberattack prompted officials to take the websites offline as a precautionary measure to prevent the malware from spreading further. Among the affected departments were the Public Works Department (PWD), Transport Department, Tourism Department and several other government portals.The Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA) acted swiftly to restore the websites within hours. Officials said the recovery was made possible through secure backup systems, ensuring that essential public services resumed with minimal disruption.

According to officials, the state's strengthened cybersecurity infrastructure played a crucial role in containing the attack. The enhanced security measures were introduced following a major cyberattack in October 2024, which had exposed vulnerabilities in Uttarakhand's digital ecosystem and prompted the government to bolster its cyber defence mechanisms.According to officials,the upgraded systems enabled rapid detection and isolation of the malware, preventing it from causing widespread damage or compromising critical government data.
While the websites have been restored, authorities are continuing to investigate the source and nature of the malware attack. Cybersecurity teams are carrying out detailed forensic analyses to determine how the attackers gained access and whether any sensitive information was affected.
