Uganda President Yoweri Museveni has lauded the significant contributions of Indian returnees to his country’s economic development. At the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Kampala, Museveni recognized their notable accomplishments.Delving into Uganda’s historical context, with a specific focus on the expulsion of Asians, primarily Indian Ugandans, during the rule of Idi Amin, President Museveni acknowledged the regrettable mistakes made by the government at that time. He said, Amin’s actions, which included severing ties with India, had adverse effects on Uganda. Amin’s actions led to the expulsion of skilled individuals who were actively involved in various sectors, including sugar, hotels, and steel production.
President Museveni also inform about the steps taken by the Ugandan government to rectify the problems created by Amin. When "we came into government, we gave back the properties of our Asian citizens and non-citizens that Amin had taken from them," he said.Since their return to the country in the 1980s and 1990s, Asians from the Indian subcontinent have once again become a pillar of the country's economy."I was asking people how many factories have been built by our Indian returnees. They told me about the 900 factories that they had built since they came back."
Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan attended the inaugural session of the Third South Summit at Kampala in Uganda. The theme of the Summit, "Leaving No One Behind" resonates with India’s ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam- the World is One Family.the Third South Summit of the Group of 77 and China is being held 18 years after the Second Summit that took place in the State of Qatar in June, 2005.
