The US House of Representatives has adjourned for a third straight day without a speaker. The party leader Kevin McCarthy.lost a further five rounds of voting on Thursday. The race to control the lower chamber is now the longest in 164 years faction ridden Republicans unable to unite behind its official candidate McCarthy. Trump's sole vote came from Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, who plumped for the former president as a 'symbolic but pointed sign of the broad divisions over the Republican Party's future. Gaetz had formally nominated Trump to be House speaker on the 11th round of voting. In a video,House clerk Cheryl Johnson read out the votes from the 11th round of votes. "The honorable Donald J Trump of Florida has received one [vote]," she can be heard saying, after which there is a chorus of laughter.

The Republicans claimed a narrow House majority in November - a nine-seat margin that should have allowed McCarthy a relatively easy ride to the Speaker's chair. The House has not seen this level of dysfunction since 1859, when it took 10 votes to select a leader in the turbulent run-up to the Civil War.Members of Congress said McCarthy, endorsed for the post by former president Donald Trump, had offered to weaken the speaker position as a way to win over 20 right-wing Republicans who have repeatedly blocked his bid — changes that political allies warn would make doing the job even harder. However, defectors are holding firm and there is no end in sight to the stalemate that has paralysed Congress.
