The Supreme Court has refused to postpone Tripura civic polls. The Apex Court said the election process has begun and the campaigning is set to end on Tuesday, The court mentioned that postponing the elections is a matter of last and extreme recourse. "It is our view that short of postponing elections, the apprehension expressed by the TMC can be suitably addressed by issuing directions to the Tripura government to ensure that remaining phases of the municipal elections take place in a peaceful and orderly manner," added the court.
The Court has ordered the Tripura government to maintain peace ahead and during the elections. The TMC filed a petition before the Supreme Court regarding the “worsening law and order situation” in Tripura. The voting is on November 25 and the counting is on November 28.The Supreme Court also asked the law enforcement agencies to discharge their duties in an even-handed and non-partisan manner. As of now, there are three battalions of CRPF in the state for field duty. Seventeen companies, comprising 78 sections, have been drafted for election duty. Twelve more sections are to be drafted. This indicates that out of the three CRPF battalions in the state, nearly 2 battalion strength are being deployed for the election.
