Sensex rises 272 points, Nifty above 21,600 in volatile trade

The domestic equity market indices ended the session on a positive note on Wednesday amid a fall in Asian peers and as investors preferred to stay on the sidelines ahead of inflation data and key earnings this week. Banks and utilities were the top drags in today's session. The broader market, meanwhile,underperformed the benchmarks today.At close, the Sensex was up 271.50 points or 0.38 percent at 71,657.71, and the Nifty was up 73.85 points or 0.34 percent at 21,618.70. About 1772 shares advanced, 1495 shares declined, and 75 shares unchanged.
Stocks and Sectors
Cipla, Reliance Industries, Adani Enterprises, HCL Technologies and Adani Ports were the top gainers on the Nifty, while losers included ONGC, Divis Labs, BPCL, NTPC and Power Grid Corporation.
On the sectoral front, Healthcare, Information Technology and Metal up 0.4 percent each, while Oil & Gas index down 0.5 percent.BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended marginally higher.
On 10 Jan'24,the Indian rupee depreciated 4 paise to close at 83.17 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday amid selling of equities by foreign investors and an upward movement in crude oil prices. Subdued sentiment in the domestic equity markets also weighed on the Indian currency, forex traders said.
Experts Take
Market experts have recommended six stocks to buy or sell on Wednesday -Sun Pharma, Apollo Hospital, Kotak Bank, State Bank of India, State Bank of India, Abbot India and Nykaa.
