Rajnath commissions ICG’s pollution control vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday commissioned the Indian Coast Guard’s first indigenously designed and built pollution control vessel, Samudra Pratap, at the Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Vasco, South Goa.The 114.5-metre-long vessel has been constructed by GSL with over 60 per cent indigenous content. Weighing 4,200 tonnes, Samudra Pratap can achieve speeds of more than 22 knots and has an endurance of 6,000 nautical miles, officials said. The vessel is expected to play a key role in enforcing marine pollution control regulations, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. It was formally delivered to the Coast Guard in December before being commissioned on Monday.Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Indian Coast Guard Director General Paramesh Sivamani were present at the commissioning ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Rajnath Singh said the occasion was linked to India’s broader maritime vision. “India believes that marine resources are not the property of any one country; they are the shared heritage of humanity. When heritage is shared, its responsibility is also shared. This is why India has today become a responsible maritime power,” he said. The defence minister also highlighted the government’s focus on women’s empowerment within the armed forces. He said women officers are being entrusted with key responsibilities such as pilots, observers, air traffic controllers and logistics officers, and are also being trained for hovercraft operations. “Today, women are not only in support roles, but are also serving as front-line warriors,” he said.

The commissioning of Samudra Pratap marks a significant step in India’s push for atmanirbharta in shipbuilding and maritime capability development, the Coast Guard said in a statement. The vessel, whose name means “Majesty of the Seas,” reflects the force’s commitment to ensuring safe, secure and clean seas while protecting India’s maritime interests. The ship represents a major advancement in indigenous ship design and construction, strengthening the Coast Guard’s operational preparedness and environmental protection capabilities.
