Polling for 55 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh and 40 in Goa started at 7am. Voting for 70 seats of the Uttarakhand Assembly will start at 8am. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday urged voters of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa to turn up in record numbers for the second phase of polling to strengthen the festival of democracy. He reminded the voters to first vote and do any other work with the message “pehle matdaan, fir anya koi kaam” As many as 2.02 crore voters will decide the electoral fate of 586 candidates in the fray in the second phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. 23,404 polling places and 12,544 polling stations have been set up across nine poll-bound districts of the state.
Uttarakhand's 70 assembly seats spread over 13 districts will go to the polls on Monday. At least 81 lakh voters of the state will decide the fate of 632 candidate. Polling will begin at 8 am and conclude at 6 pm. Prominent candidates: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, his cabinet colleagues Satpal Maharaj, Subodh Uniyal, Arvind Pandey, Dhan Singh Rawat and Rekha Arya besides state BJP president Madan Kaushik. From Congress, the prominent candidates are former CM Harish Rawat, former minister Yashpal Arya, state Congress president Ganesh Godiyal and Leader of Opposition in the fourth assembly, Pritam Singh.
Goans are voting to decide the fate of 301 candidates who are in the fray for 40 Assembly seats. The coastal state, with over 11 lakh voters, is witnessing a multi-cornered contest this time, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government facing challenge from the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and other smaller parties. Prominent candidates: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant (BJP), Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat (Congress), former CMs Churchill Alemao (TMC), Ravi Naik (BJP), Laxmikant Parsekar (independent), former deputy CMs Vijai Sardesai (GFP) and Sudin Dhavalikar (MGP), late CM Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar and AAP's CM face Amit Paleker.
