Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in New Delhi on Saturday during the14th India-Japan Annual Summit. This is the Japanese Prime Minister's first visit to India since assuming office last year. Kishida, accompanied by a high-level delegation of Japanese officials, was received at the Delhi airport by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier in the day. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a tweet: "Advancing friendship with Japan. Prime Ministers @narendramodi and @kishida230 held productive talks in New Delhi. Both leaders discussed ways to boost economic and cultural linkages between the two countries".

The previous India-Japan annual summit took place in October 2018 between PM Modi and the then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The summit could not be held in 2019 due to protests over the amended citizenship law in Guwahati and 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Interestingly, 2022 also marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The meeting holds immense significance as it is taking place amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Japan and India are the members of the Quad alliance which also includes the United States and Australia.
