Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated Micron Technology’s semiconductor ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging) facility at Sanand in Gujarat, marking the commencement of commercial production at the plant and a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor ambitions.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said that a decade ago, discussions around data and semiconductor chips in India were limited, with most focus centred on IT services.“Today, India, which is globally known for software, is strengthening its identity in the hardware sector as well. In Sanand, we are witnessing the emergence of a new future. The beginning of commercial production at Micron’s ATMP facility will further strengthen India’s role in the global technology value chain,” he said.Modi described the inauguration as another historic step in India’s journey towards technology leadership. Referring to the recently held AI Summit, he said that while the summit highlighted India’s capabilities in artificial intelligence, the launch of the semiconductor facility demonstrated the country’s broader commitment to advanced technology and manufacturing.“The beginning of commercial production in this ATMP facility will strengthen India’s role in the global value chain. India is rapidly becoming an integral part of the global semiconductor ecosystem,” he added.

Speaking at the event, Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra termed the inauguration a historic moment for both the company and India.“Today is not just an inauguration. It is a moment in history,” Mehrotra said, recalling his childhood in Delhi and his education at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.“As a young boy, I was reminded every day that with conviction and determination, we can build what has never been built before. Standing here in Sanand feels like a full circle moment. From the school that carries his name to the state that carries his belief, today we celebrate something that has never been built here before — a pioneering advanced semiconductor assembly and test facility in India. Micron is proud to be the pioneer in making this happen,” he said.
The Sanand facility is expected to significantly enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities and deepen its integration into the global semiconductor supply chain, reinforcing the country’s position as an emerging hub for high-tech production.
