In Manipur, an Assam Rifles Colonel, his wife and eight-year-old son, and four soldiers were killed in an ambush by terrorists near the border with Myanmar at Churachandpur district on Saturday morning. According to information, the Commanding Officer (CO) of 46 Assam Rifles, Colonel Viplav Tripathy, had gone to a forward camp and was returning when his convoy was ambushed.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strongly condemned the attack on the Assam Rifles convoy in Manipur. In a tweet, Modi said, their sacrifice will never be forgotten. He also paid homage to those soldiers and family members who have been martyred today and said his thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of sadness. Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh confirmed the incident and said that the commandant and others have been killed in the ambush. Singh tweeted a counter-operation has been launched to track down the terrorists.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the attack and gave his condolences.

Manipur-based People's Liberation Army is suspected behind the attack, reports said, though no terrorist militant organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.The Assam Rifles is a paramilitary force that operates under the Army's control and is used mainly for counter-insurgency operations in the northeast.
