Three Jan Suraksha Schemes launched by the Centre to provide affordable social security coverage have completed 11 years, with cumulative enrolments crossing 94.5 crore, the government said on Saturday.Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9, 2015, the flagship schemes — Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) — were aimed at extending low-cost insurance and pension benefits to underserved and vulnerable sections of society.
According to official data till April 30, cumulative enrolments under PMJJBY have crossed 27.43 crore, while PMSBY has recorded more than 58.09 crore enrolments. More than 9.04 crore individuals have enrolled under the APY scheme, taking the combined total to over 94.5 crore.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the Jan Suraksha Schemes were launched to provide affordable insurance and pension coverage to citizens, especially those with limited access to formal financial protection mechanisms.Highlighting the schemes’ progress over the last 11 years, Sitharaman said PMJJBY has settled claims worth over Rs 21,500 crore, benefiting more than 10.7 lakh families. Similarly, PMSBY has settled claims worth nearly Rs 3,660 crore for over 1.84 lakh families.“As we mark the 11th anniversary of the Jan Suraksha schemes, heartfelt appreciation for all the stakeholders, including field functionaries of banks and insurance companies, whose dedicated efforts have made these schemes a huge success,” she said.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the key objective of the schemes is to provide insurance coverage and pension support to the poorest sections of society. He added that digitisation and simplification of enrolment and claims processes have played a major role in expanding access and improving efficiency. The launch of the online Jan Suraksha Portal has enabled citizens to enrol conveniently without visiting bank branches or post offices, while digitised claim settlements have ensured faster financial assistance to affected families. The government said the schemes continue to strengthen financial inclusion by protecting citizens against life’s uncertainties and encouraging long-term financial resilience across the country.
