Himanta Biswa Sarma will succeed Sarbananda Sonowal as the Chief Minister of Assam. At the legislature party meeting held in Guwahati on Sunday,Sonowal had proposed the name of Sarma and it was seconded by the MLAs.Sarma’s name as BJP’s legislature party leader was announced by union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar who was appointed a central observer for the meeting along with party’s national general secretary Arun Singh.
“I asked other MLAs if they had any other names in mind. No other name was suggested. Since the name of Sarma, a senior minister in our state government was the only one that was proposed, he is unanimously chosen as the legislature party leader,” Tomar said after the meeting. Prior to the BJP Legislature Party meeting in Guwahati, Sarbananda Sonowal tendered his resignation to Governor Jagadish Mukhi. Sarma, who switched to the BJP from the Congress six years ago, is credited as the architect who brought the northeast states within the party's grasp. He also handled the health portfolio in the Sarbananda Sonowal government.
Himanta Biswa Sarma had quit the Congress government of Tarun Gogoi in 2015. He then promptly joined the BJP, becoming its key strategist for the northeast.Sarbananda Sonawal and Himanta Biswa Sarma met party president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Saturday. Talks related to the formation of the next government in Assam and who will be the chief minister dominated the meetings.
