In Himachal Pradesh, at least 18 people have died after a massive landslide in Bilaspur district buried a private bus under heavy debris on Tuesday. Several passengers are still feared trapped as rescue operations continue.The bus, carrying around 35 passengers, was on its way from Haryana's Rohtak to Ghumarwin, near Bilaspur, when, due to heavy rain, the entire hill came crashing onto the bus.The incident occurred near Ballu Bridge when a large amount of mud and rocks slid down from a hillside and crashed onto a private bus. The impact buried the vehicle under the debris.
The bus was operating on the Marotan-Kalaul route when the accident took place. Teams from the police, fire department, and disaster management authority have reached the spot and are working to clear the debris.

President Droupadi Murmu condoled the loss of lives. “The news of the deaths of several people in a bus accident caused by a landslide in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, is extremely tragic. I express my condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and pray for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured,” Murmu said in a post on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund to the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 to those injured. "Saddened by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured," a PMO statement said.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also expressed grief over the accident and directed the officials to carry out the rescue operations.
Expressing grief over the accident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are carrying out the rescue efforts. "I am deeply saddened by the bus accident caused by a landslide in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. NDRF teams have reached the incident site and are engaged in rescue operations. I express my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. At the same time, I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," Shah wrote in a post on X.
