Heavy rains for the last three-four days have triggered flooding of major rivers in Central MP and Mahakoshal region, affecting thousands of people. Heavy rains also triggered the collapse of two high capacity road bridges in Seoni district.Major rivers in state including Narmada, Chambal, Sone, Shipra,Sindh, Betwa, Ken, Tapti and Mahi were flowing above the danger mark. As per information over a dozen people have been killed due to house/wall collapse and flood related incidents. Nearly 12000 people from 454 villages in 12 districts falling under Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Jabalpur and Chhindwada divisions were rescued by the SDRE, NDRE teams. Air Force helicopters were also deployed to airlift stranded persons in flood affected areas.
Narmada river was swelling above the danger mark all along, due to incessant rains, resulting to opening of floodgates of Bargi, Tawa, Barna (Jabalpur), Indra Sagar dam, Ohmkareshwar dam, Rajghat dam.Chief Miniister Shivraj Singh Chouhan conducted an aerial survey of the affected districts and also reviewed the rescue works being carried out by the local administration and police. The CM also spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the floods in the state.According to reports Hoshangabad district was badly affecte and was cut off from all direction till Sunday. Similar condition prevailed in Harda, Chhindwada, Sagar. Ujjain, Indore and other districts of Malwa region were also affected due to torrential rains. The Parvati, Betwa,Sindh and Chambal rivers on the downstream of Malwa and Bhopal region were in spate due to heavy rains.The arterial road link connecting Sheopur to Kota (Rajasthan) and Bara district was disrupted. Similarly Shivpuri-Ashoknagar route was closed after raging Sindh River resulting to opening of sluice gates of Madikheda dam in Shivpuri district. Relief and rehabilitation centers were setup in many places.
According to estimates crop damage in 7 lakh hectare has been reported in state due to incessant rains besides livestock and material loss.Ironically districts in Gwalior and Chambal region are rain deficient while several parts in state are reeling under flood fury. Meanwhile IMD Bhopal centre has said the low pressured area causing rains in the state was centered over the west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining eastern Rajasthan. It is likely to shift to Rajasthan. Overall, the state has received 815.2mm of rainfall till Saturday morning against the expected rain of 743 mm.
