Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday unveiled a commemorative postal stamp and special cover based on the tribal festival Kawant Ger Mela, marking a significant step toward giving national recognition to Gujarat’s rich tribal heritage.The first copy of the postal stamp and special cover was presented to the chief minister by Postmaster General Krishna Kumar Yadav at an event held in Gandhinagar.
The initiative aims to highlight the cultural importance of the annual Kawant Ger Mela, held in the tribal belt of Kawant in Chhota Udepur. The issuance of the postal stamp is expected to bring wider national and international attention to Gujarat’s vibrant tribal traditions and cultural heritage.The Kawant Ger Mela is regarded as one of the most distinctive tribal festivals in the region, celebrated with traditional music, dance, colourful attire and rituals by members of the Rathva tribal community. The festival serves as a living expression of tribal identity and community bonding.
Speaking on the occasion, officials said the initiative reflects the spirit of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi,” showcasing both development and preservation of cultural heritage. The festival not only celebrates tribal art and traditions but also passes them on to future generations while symbolising harmony with nature and social unity.Among those present at the event were Chhota Udepur Lok Sabha MP Jashubhai Rathva, MLA Abhesinh Tadvi, Chhota Udepur Collector Gargi Jain, Senior Superintendent of Posts R. B. Thakor, and representatives of the Rathva tribal community.
