Prime Minister and senior BJP leader Narendra Modi on Monday promised a 'Nava Punjab' in his first rally in the poll-bound state. Addressing an election rally in Jalandhar. Attacking Congress in his speech, the prime minister said that the incumbent government was being remote-controlled by a family in Delhi. He claimed that governments in all Congress-ruled states were working under orders from the Gandhi family. Modi attacked Rahul Gandhi over a 2014 incident when he said his helicopter was held up in Punjab because "Yuvraj (prince)" was flying to Amritsar. PM Modi said he had gone to Punjab to campaign for the 2014 national election, after being named the BJP's presumptive Prime Minister, when the incident took place.
Modi also praised former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh, whose newly formed Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) is contesting the polls as a constituent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Former CM Amarinder SIngh worked with the Centre according to federalism. PM Modi said that the security situation in the state had since not improved. He told the public that his request for security during his visit to a temple was denied by the state government. The Congress is "paying for its misdeeds" now, the Prime Minister said."Look at the state of the Congress. Their own party is falling apart. Their own leaders are exposing them. A party with so much infighting - can it give a stable government to Punjab?" PM Modi questioned.
He took a swipe at former allies, the Shiromani Akali Dal. He said Punjab should have got a deputy chief minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in Parkash Singh Badal’s government. Amarinder Singh also spoke briefly, praising Narendra Modi’s leadership and calling him a strong Prime Minister. “At a time when Punjab’s surrounded by Pakistan, China, and the Taliban, I’m glad Modiji is our prime minister,” Capt Amarinder Singh said in his speech. Captain said Punjab and the central government needed to work together to deal with Punjab's financial crisis. "Punjab's drowning in debt," he said. He said his former party, the Congress, and its leaders kept saying how he loved the BJP. “Today I say I do. I love Narendra Modi and I love Amit Shah.”
