California is in its third straight day of battling multiple out-of-control wildfires in the Los Angeles area in what has become the most destructive fire event in the region’s history. Driven by fierce winds, the fires have overwhelmed the area’s firefighting resources. Critical fire weather conditions are set to continue across Southern California through January 14, possibly longer — and there is no significant rainfall in sight.Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, the Hollywood Hills, Sylmar and areas in and around Pasadena. The death toll stands at 7 but officials say they expect it to rise as they sift through rubble. Meanwhile, A new fire, the Kenneth Fire, sparked Thursday afternoon near Woodland Hills.

Zero per cent of the two major fires in Eaton and the Pacific Palisades, devastating the Los Angeles region in the US, have contained, reported news agency AFP on Thursday. Three more fires also continue to rage, the Hurst fire has been 10 per cent contained and the Lidia fire 40 per cent contained on Thursday morning, reported CBS News.Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass stated, "The winds continue to be of a historic nature... this is absolutely an unprecedented, historic firestorm."
